Thom's Poland LDS FHC locality search helper (raw form).

pre 1975 Polish provinces This is just a list of simple links to the various places that http://www.familysearch.org/ has defined for Poland. I have intended to do something more with organizing this and presenting it better, but I've waited long enough, and decided just to post it as is. I hope that it may be helpful for someone even so.

Poland was divided into 17 provinces prior to 1975 and these are apparently the provinces that the LDS uses to classify the records. The map at the right is the pre-1975 map of Poland. However, there are eight other provinces that the LDS lists as part of Poland, and this is because pre-1772 Poland was much larger than modern day. These are East of the map I have. I need to get a better map to show where these are in relation to the rest.

The 8 Provinces - Not on the Map

The following are treated as provinces of Poland by the LDS even though they don't appear on the map above. They should more or less correspond to the 1921-1939 provinces of the east, but I really don't know how the LDS chose to classify them. In any case, from North to South (generally), they are: Wilno, Nowogrodek, Polesie, Wolyn, Lwow, Tarnopol, Stanislawow. If I have this wrong please correct me. There is a map of the inter-war poland at the PGSA website. You can look at it here. It's a 93K GIF image. Suwalki would probably be a the part of Lithuania that lies west of Wilno.
